Makeup at the Gym: Do or Don’t?

There are plenty of reasons why we wear makeup to the gym. Perhaps we’re coming straight from work and still have our face on from the work day. Maybe we put a little on before we left the house so that we don’t look like zombies when we hit the treadmill. No matter what the reasons are for keeping our makeup on during our workouts, we could actually be doing more harm than we know.

Here are the top 3 reasons to go fresh faced at the gym:

  •       DETOX YOUR SKIN: When we exercise, we sweat. When we sweat, our pores open up and perspiration and toxins are just begging to come out. Wearing makeup will prevent the skin from breathing and in turn will prevent the skin from properly detoxifying.
  •       AVOID BREAKOUTS: Leaving face makeup on during a workout traps dirt, oil, and sweat. This can cause blackheads, unsightly blemishes, and even infection. No one wants that!
  •       PREVENT FUTURE SKIN CONDITIONS: As we raise our heart rate and start to sweat, heat is unable to properly dissipate. This can trigger underlying skin conditions to worsen over time, such as rosacea, causing redness and uneven skin tone.

So what are the steps you need to take before hitting the gym?

Step 1: Cleanse your skin before and after your workout. This your best option for optimal skin health as each cleanse serves a different and important purpose.

Step 2: Follow up your cleanser with a spritz of pH balancing toner and a lightweight moisturizer.

Step 3: If you want to apply a bit of makeup post-workout, you can never go wrong with:

  • A tinted moisturizer,
  • A bit of mascara, and
  • Your favorite lip and cheek stain.

These steps plus the workout you just put in will leave your skin glowing and fresh all day long!
