Summer is over and we are already one month into our back-to-school or back-to-work routines. Colder weather, rain and homework are big call backs to reality, but don’t let the routine drag you down. Here are our 4 top tips to stay in tip top shape during this fall season!
I know you don’t have much time to cook and stopping by that drive-thru may sound very appealing, but this will wreak havoc on your diet and may actually cost you more time than cooking yourself! Fast food lowers your energy levels (hello to you, sugar laden drinks!) and tempts you to hit the hay, rather than cramming for that stat exam. I suggest meal planning – like, actually cooking in advance. Choose one meat (veggie-friendly: marinated tofu or seasoned beans) with one veggie and freeze it. When you are ready to consume the meal, leave it in the fridge in the morning to defrost and throw it in the oven when you come back home and tada! Moving along, if you think that firing up the crockpot is something only your mother would do, you are wrong! You can throw everything in there the night before, leave it in the fridge, start in the am and come back to a hot meal already done for you!
YOLO, right? No! With all those parties going on and exams to study for (remember that stat exam?), you might be tempted to cut back some hours of sleep. If you think about it, cutting only one hour of sleep every night means that at the end of your week you are missing one whole night of sleep! Sleep debt is a real thing and I wouldn’t want you to look like this in class. So sleep and enjoy it. If you do skip some precious hours, don’t be scared to nap and even power nap. They say that most successful people do it, plus it leaves you more energized. The best length should be 30 minutes, as it doesn’t leave you groggy.
Endorphins – ‘nuff said.
Do you ever wonder why when final exam time comes around, everyone comes in with their tissue box, looking like they’re dying of the black plague? STRESS. Stress will do that to you when you least need it. Stress shuts down your metabolism. Meditation, yoga or even daily breathing exercises will help you calm down and tackle your most stressful weeks.
Whether you are back to school or back to your working routine, the key is to take care of yourself and to do things that you enjoy. Drop in at the gym and let us know how our tips are helping you get back to the grind!
