Do you want to start that thing called yoga? Here are some things to know before your first yoga class.
Yoga is about spirituality and well-being. More and more, people adapt to yoga and include it in their weekly routine. It’s undeniable that the health benefits are there. If you, too, are thinking of starting to practice yoga, you might want to read this article. I am sharing a few things I’ve learned over the past years and I hope my tips and tricks help you figure out your place in the yoga world. Here are the things you will need to have and things you will need to do before your first yoga class.
- Well-fitted clothes; nothing too loose.
Often the yoga poses will be psychologically demanding and you will need to stay in positions that challenge your body as well as your mind. It is not the time for your t-shirt to flip upside down over your head or your pants to be all slippery when you start sweating. Yoga wear and gear is as important as the practice itself. You will need to have an obstacle free outfit for your practice to have its full effect. We are lucky enough that yoga and loungewear are in full fashion bloom these days. I’m talking long yoga leggings, a sports bra (ladies, you know it), a fitted long sleeve shirt or tank top. Yes, they are tight but there is a reason behind it: it’s so you can stay in the zone and be comfy! Don’t let slipping or dripping disturb your om’ing.
- Don’t spend a fortune!
When you try something new such as yoga, don’t go overboard and break your piggy bank on high-end equipment. Try it first! However, I promise that you’ll eventually fall in love with yoga and want to get the latest and greatest gear. As for clothes, you don’t need to spend a fortune to look and feel great on your mat. I like Winners where you can find great brands at a reasonable price. Also, Forever 21 has a great workout section for a fraction of the cost of the big name brands. You can find them in stores or online, where you get free shipping on orders over $60. My favorite of all time is a collection designed by Kate Hudson, called Fabletics. The clothes and accessories are super affordable and fashionable (I personally wanted to buy everything!). Plus, you get your first outfit for no more than $25.
- You will need a mat.
For your first yoga session, borrow it from a friend to see if you like it. Since you will probably be hooked after your first class, here are some great spots with not too expensive options. Winners: don’t we all just love to go there? They have cool yoga mats starting at $14.99, straps, blocks and even microfiber yoga towels. Also, the big department and home goods stores usually have them too (Canadian Tire, Walmart, etc.). You can even find a mat online and get a really good deal (Amazon, or even Fabletics).
- Things yogis don’t tell you.
Here are some things I wish I knew before my first yoga session:
- Bring a water bottle, or two! It might get really hot in there!
- Bring a towel.
- No shoes in the room (socks only but make sure to remove them before practice).
- You are responsible to bring your own mat.
- When you come in, grab a block in case you need it during practice.
- Come in about 5 to 10 minutes before class to get a nice spot for your mat and to have time to settle down.
- Turn off your cellphone (vibrate mode is not an alternative).
- If you come in with a friend, whisper. It is a really nice gesture to others yogis who are already getting in the zone.
I hope that these tips help maximize your first yoga experience. Have fun with your yoga practice and you will feel the health benefits it can bring you. Also, enjoy the fashion part of yoga…it is equally fun!
